August is Membership and New Club Development Month
President's Message

Hello Glenferrie club members and welcome to another week and month in Rotary.

We do have such an active, vibrant and welcoming club and of course we want to continue and grow that dynamism.

I would like to encourage all members to join in the pleasures of getting involved beyond the weekly dinners. Joanne has just updated us that Oxana, Wendy and Maria have taken on tasks as part of their membership in club service; well done ladies.

Fantastic Fundraising Opportunity as Club Gifted Innovative Walking Sticks
The club has been gifted 1200 LightWalker walking sticks by the Estate of the Late Walter Glaser and his late dear wife Cherie. Expected to sell for around $20-$25 each, the gift has the potential to raise between $20,000 and $24,000 for the club's Sierra Leone project and other service projects. Walter, who in his later years needed the assistance of a walking stick, designed the "LightWalker" walking sticks himself, after finding most sticks on offer deficient in so many ways.

There will be more about the Fundraising project and, importantly, how you can help, in next week's Bulletin. But, in the meantime, who were Walter and Cherie Glaser, to whom the club owes such a debt of gratitude? Walter and Cherie were travel writers, amongst many things, and wrote most of Fodor's Guide to Australia. Their story is quite remarkable, in particular Walter's escape from pre-war Austria, and the role of a future Australian Prime Minister in that escape. Click on Read More... below to learn more of Walter's remarkable story.

And please keep an eye out for next week's Bulletin to learn how you can help with this project. Thank you so much, Walter and Cherie, for your generous gift, which will be put to beneficial use in service to our community.

The Fathering Project - Speaker Terry McAleenan

Terry McAleenan gave an informative and inspiring talk about his involvement with the Fathering Project, an organisation founded by Dr Bruce Robinson (in Western Australia) in 2013.

Their aims are to improve child development outcomes by inspiring and equipping fathers and father figures to effectively engage with their kids. Their vision is for every child in Australia to have an effective father figure.

Was that Spring in the Air at the Boroondara Farmers Market?
There was just a hint of spring in the mid-winter air at the Boroondara Farmers Market July 29th, enticing shoppers to come out and do their shopping en plein air. Business was brisk all morning at this, the third market for the month, and shoppers weren't disappointed with high quality stallholders and wonderful produce on offer. Adrian van Kampen of Club Creek Bulb Farm added just a little more glow to the winter sunshine, and just a little hint of spring. Click on Read more.. below for more photos from the July 29th Farmers Market.

Adrian from Club Creek Bulb Farm was all smiles and flowers at the Boroondara Farmers Market July 29th. Quality was on display everywhere as the sun came out, and so did the crowds.

In the Spirit of Caring - RI President
After the 2023 Rotary International Convention in Melbourne, I asked all Rotary members to become champions in our effort to illuminate mental health needs near and far. This includes helping one another feel more supported, advocating for mental health services, and building bridges with experts in the field to expand access to treatment.

It’s an important task and a big ask. But it’s also something that should feel familiar to every Rotary member – because everything we do is in the spirit of caring, giving, friendship and compassion, and has been from the beginning of our organisation.
