I thought members might be interested to know that in Rotary District 9800 there are presently 62 clubs and 1874 members, but of course the structure is going to be changing in 2024.
The Xmas party on 19th promises to be a fantastic celebration, congratulations to the organising committee.

The club welcomed new member Amelia Hamer at the club meeting on December 12th, inducted with the vocational classification Finance-Technology. Amelia, a resident of Kew, holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford. She has had a distinguished career in Australia and in the UK, in finance, business strategy and in politics and government. Until 2022 Amelia was Policy Adviser to The Hon Jane Hume, Minister for Superannuation, Financial Services and the Digital Economy in the Morrison Government. She has recently nominated for selection as the Liberal Party candidate for the Federal seat of Kooyong. Amelia has expressed a keen interest in Youth Service, but is also keenly interested in all the Rotary Avenues of Service. Amelia's mentor is PP Richard Blakeman.
A very warm welcome to Rotary, Amelia. We look forward to working alongside you for many years to come to Do Good in the World.

There were plenty of reasons to be jolly at the Boroondara Farmers Market on Saturday as one Jolly ol' fella brought smiles and lollies to little folk gathered at Patterson Reserve, Hawthorn.
The Christmas market is always something special, and this year's was no different. Glorious sunshine brought out the shoppers and trading was brisk. PP Charles Tran and his helpers sold out of the last of the Rotary Christmas cakes and puddings, and PP Richard Blakeman and Amelia Anderson were absolutely delighted to be rushed off their feet for orders of LightWalker walking sticks. So that's it for another year. Merry Christmas everyone. Ho! Ho! Ho!

At our meeting last Tuesday, we were very fortunate to have as our guest speaker Dr Harry Eeman.
Harry was a young medical student when he was struck down by a severe form of Gillian Barre Syndrome whilst backpacking in Europe. One morning he woke up with double vision and then found that he was unable to walk without fainting. GBS is a condition where our own immune system — which usually attacks only invading organisms — begins attacking our own nerves. The exact cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome isn't known. The disorder usually appears days or weeks after a respiratory or digestive tract infection.

Members of the Rotary Club of Madison, Wisconsin, started a composting project in 2022 that diverts food scraps from their weekly lunch from the landfill and turns them into fertilizer for a community garden affiliated with an elementary school.
After a few months, the finished compost is ready to use to fertilize the garden plots. “It’s great for the kids, great for the community, and great for Rotary,” says David Edinger, who spearheaded the project as co-chair of the club’s Going Green Fellowship. Here’s a closer look at how it works.

According to legend, he was so moved by the beauty of the stars shining between the branches of a tree, he brought home an evergreen tree and decorated it with candles to share the image with his children.
Christmas stockings allegedly evolved from three sisters who were too poor to afford a marriage dowry and were, therefore, doomed to a life of prostitution. They were saved, however, when the wealthy Bishop Saint Nicholas (precursor to Santa Clause) crept down the chimney and generously filled their stockings with gold coins.
