Presidential Musings
According to Geoff Widmer, Columbia is not the hot spot we used to know. My impressions of Columbia were CIA and Romancing the Stone movies, so it was refreshing and important to note that Columbia has cleaned up its image. Certainly, Geoff, who was the honorary consul for Columbia, was able to guide us though the tourism, government and economic prospects of a health nation. As per usual, the best talks come from our home grown sources and we were not disappointed.

It was a delight to finally induct Garfield Lee into our “family” and more is to come with the induction of Ms Sudha Saini tomorrow. A comment has been made that there was a lot of congestion in that room and 1.5m spacing wasn’t at its best. One reason is the late notification of people that they are coming to the meeting. Our Club Director must have numbers to let Kooyong TC staff know, so they can supply a bigger room if necessary. So please let Rod know and pay well in advance.

Welcome to Rotary Garfield Lee

The club welcomed a new member into the fold at the club meeting on February 8th, with the induction of Garfield Lee, pictured here (centre) with President Dr. Mark Ellis AM, left, and Rotary mentor PP Ian Salek. Garfield has been admitted to Rotary in the vocational classification Finance-Corporate.

A friend of Ian Salek's, Garfield has attended a number of club meetings already and, with a sense of humour that is reflected in his broad smile, is a welcome addition to the growing ranks of Glenferrie Rotarians. Welcome to Rotary Garfield! We look forward to many years working alongside you to 'Do Good in the World'.
Thoughts on Colombia - Geoff Widmer

Geoff Widmer shared his encyclopaedic knowledge on the country of Colombia.

Geoff had, during his memorable ‘Member Behind the Badge’ presentation in late 2021, touched upon his extensive experience in that country and his role as Melbourne-based Honorary Consul for Colombia.

In fact, he so engaged his audience on that occasion that he was invited back to present in greater depth on the Latin American country that suffers from such ‘bad press’.

It was Geoff’s goal to help dispel the overwhelming image of drug lords, gang wars violence and corruption that, for most of us, is synonymous with Colombia.

Vale Paul Gregory
A number of Glenferrie Rotarians and former Rotarians attended a Greek Orthodox Funeral Service on Thursday at the beautiful Presentation to Our Lady of the Temple Church in Balwyn North to celebrate the full life of former member, Paul (Apostolos) Gregory. Paul was born in 1942 in Perth and had a very happy childhood surrounded by many of his parents' relatives - his mother had eight brothers and sisters.

Clean Up Australia Day - 6th March 2022
As in previous years the Rotary Club of Glenferrie has registered a Clean Up site entitled, "Patterson Reserve and surrounding streets". The plan is to gather at 9.30am at the Rotary container followed by 2-3 hours of collecting rubbish dumped by our fellow citizens: an illuminating experience! A BBQ and opportunity for a chat will follow at 12.00 - 12.30pm. Overall, I have found the last two events to be most enjoyable and worthwhile.

Please keep the day free and sign up via the following the link or register on the day. To register now click here.

Rail Trails Australia
Rail Trails Australia

Rail trails follow the routes of former railways. They cut through hills, over embankments and across gullies and creeks. Most have a gravel or dirt surface and are great for walking, mountain bikes and horses. Some are sealed and are great for touring bikes too. Dr Steven Kaye, Committee Member, and Darren McClelland, Regional Representative will inspire you with their passion for cycling these old trails, and the adventures that lie therein.
