All Rotarians are familiar with the Rotary motto, adopted in 1911, “Service above self”. The reality following from this is that many Rotarians continue to lead busy lives even in retirement. A large proportion of our members are engaged in charitable or similar activities outside of Rotary. As this message will go out either during Easter or just after, it is a great time of year for members to take a breath, look around and appreciate the great things in their lives. There is a lot of talk about global uncertainty, but it was ever thus for one reason or another. Take time to reach out to friends and families and strengthen the connections that are important to you.
At our Club meeting last Tuesday evening, we had a wonderful presentation from the Rotary Club or Bo in Sierra Leone whom we have been working with for the last 18 months or so on a WASH project at the Aladura Primary school in Buedu in the far east of the country. The project involved building two VIP (Ventilated Improved Pit) toilet blocks – one for girls and one for boys. As well as providing WASH training and establishing a Hygiene Club at the school.
By the magic of technology, they connected via zoom- which worked extremely well. The meeting started with a short video showing the progress and completion of the WASH project. The video was put together by Richard Blakeman from the hundreds of photos and videos that were taken during the project.

The annual RoCan ride took place from 5th–12th April, raising money for Ovarian Cancer. This project was initiated by the Rotary clubs of Williamston and Altona over twenty years ago. Twenty-seven riders and six support crew participated in the ride. This year’s ride started in Geelong and went via several towns finishing in Adelaide. Along the way we stayed overnight in Camperdown, Port Fairy, Mount Gambier, Kingston, Meningie, Strathalbyn and finally concluding the ride at the Glenelg Lacrosse Club.
On May 4th the Foresight Sumba Eye Program (SEP) team will be heading to Sumba for a week. Thanks to funds raised in the recent effort by the RC Glenferrie and Kew, we can mount another expedition to this under resourced eastern Island of Indonesia.
This trip is of paramount importance since we are anticipating the commissioning of at least one eye clinic in West Sumba at the Waikabubak Public Hospital. We have been in constant communications with the hospitals concerned and the ophthalmology department of Hasanuddin University, Makassar, Sulawesi.
In the The Glenferrie Rotarian published on April 22nd 2014, the recipient of The Rotary Club of Glenferrie amd Foundation Boroondara Scholarship was announced. All tickets for the forthcoming fundraiser for the Sumba Eye Program were sold out and Rotarians slow off the mark were invited to join the waiting list. And arrangements wee underway for those planning to attend the Rotary International Convention in Sydney, opening in May. "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little."
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership experience organised by Rotary clubs and districts where attendees develop their skills as a leader while having fun and making connections. Sarah Mapleson was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Glenferrie to attend the most recent RYLA. Come along and hear first hand about Sarah's RLA experience.
The Rotary Club of Glenferrie acknowledges the traditional owners as the custodians of this land, recognising their connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to Australia's First Peoples, and to their elders, past, present and future.
