Something different this past week with the visit to RIMERN. Congratulations to Alex and all the team who organised it.
I hope members have their Crissy trees erected and are able to make plans for the big day. There are no doubt many people in the world who won’t be in a position to enjoy or celebrate at Xmas time, but Glenferrie and International Rotary helps as many of them as possible and we should feel good about that.

The visit to the RIMERN warehouse was a great success with 23 Rotarians and four guests, including two potential new members, battling through peak hour traffic to arrive in east Brunswick at 6.00pm. We were welcomed with a glass of RIMERN wine and some beautifully tasty nibbles prepared by Maria Pantling.
Susie Cole, the Chair of RIMERN gave a lively presentation outlining the development of RIMERN and its substantial impact as a source of help for people emerging from hardship.

Every Rotarian knows that a primary objective for Rotary worldwide is to eradicate the scourge of polio. However did you know that ending polio is not, per se, one of the The Rotary Foundation's Areas of Focus?
While ending polio falls within the Area of Focus "Disease Prevention and Treatment", it is not an Area of Focus in itself. One Rotary objective that is an Area of Focus for Rotary and The Rotary Foundation, however, is "Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention". And yet the Rotary Club of Glenferrie, one of the strongest clubs in District 9800, with an impressive array of projects and commitments, does not currently have one consistent project aimed at building PEACE.
Should we become a Peacebuilder club? What does that involve? At a time when we are experiencing heightened confrontation in Europe, the Middle East, the South China Sea and the Straits of Taiwan, has there ever been a better time for Rotarians to champion PEACE? Come along to this Tuesday's meeting featuring the celebrated scholar Dr Tania Miletic, Assistant Director, Peacebuilding Initiative, Department of Social and Political Sciences, University of Melbourne, and Gabe Hau, Co-ordinator Peace Builder Program on the District 9800 Foundation Committee, to find out what we can do to Promote PEACE, in ourselves, our families, our community and in the world.

RYLA – Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is a weeklong camp to be held this year, from Sunday December 3rd – Saturday December 9th, 2023. It will be held at Camp Getaway, Axedale. The program aims at focusing on personal growth, leadership development and sense of community.
We are fortunate to have three candidates accepted for the camp. They are Greta Sullivan, who is in 2nd Year Bachelor of Law (Monash), Sebastien Kreuger who has just completed VCE and Jack Bowman, an Environmental Engineer for Melbourne Water.
I am taking this opportunity to again remind people of the Education CHANCES Foundation function.
As we are all aware the Club is a major benefactor of the Education CHANCES Foundation through the Farmers Market. Half of the proceeds of the market goes to the Education CHANCES Foundation. These proceeds will each year provide scholarships to over 100 disadvantaged students, who either live or go to school in Boroondara.
Education CHANCES Foundation is having an end of year function on 5 December to raise awareness, raise funds and farewell Elida Brereton, the Chair and Helen Worladge, as Program Director.
The event is at 5.30 pm at Georges, 1st Floor 819 Burke Road Camberwell. It is a cocktail type of function and tickets are $54 which includes finger food and two drinks.
Remote Macquarie Island, halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica, has provided scientists with the first glimpse of a world without nectar-seeking birds or bees. And, assuming you're into colourful flowers, it's not pretty.
Rather than vibrant reds, rich purples and bright yellows, Macquarie Island's flowers come in a limited variation of one colour: green.

Victoria’s first Rotary Peace Scholar Dr. Tania Miletic has kept up her peacebuilding theme ever since District 9800 sent her to two years’ MA studies at Tokyo’s Rotary Peace Centre at ICU in 2002, with a scholarship funded by a grant from The Rotary Foundation. She is now the Assistant Director of the University of Melbourne's Initiative for Peacebuilding within the Arts Faculty, working to promote multidisciplinary research, teaching and policy development that supports effective engagement in conflict prevention and peacebuilding in the Indo Pacific region. She is an experienced peace and conflict studies academic and practitioner with a commitment to working collaboratively to translate research into policy and practice in conflict prevention and peacebuilding in the Indo Pacific region.
Tania is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Social and Political Sciences. In Rotary Foundation Month, Tania will be joined by District 9800 Foundation Committee member Gabe Hau, who leads the D9800 Peacebuilder Program.
