Presidential Musings for the Week
Okay all – Another week in lockdown or DC (During COVID).  I hope that you are not all coming under the spell of overeating.  Exercise 60 minutes a day outside is the new norm.  Straining to breathe in a mask makes for big challenges.  Dieting can be hard.  Happy people resist disease better than unhappy ones.  In other words, the surly bird catches the germ!!  We should be looking out for our physical and mental health.

One mental health application, which is bound to work is to tune into our Rotary meetings.  Here you will “mingle” with like-minded optimistic people.  I love entering that zoom meeting, since I know I will mix with Rotarians.  Rotarians are optimistic.  We as optimists have our glass half full not half empty.  Our progress out of this dilemma will be slow but gradual.

Club's Three Year Plan focuses on Growth and Impact
Club Members unanimously endorsed the three year plan presented for adoption by President Mark Ellis at the club meeting last Tuesday. The plan sets out the path for the next three years and will guide the decision of the club's boards over that time. Framed within the global goals for Rotary, the plan aims to: Increase our Impact, Expand our Reach, Enhance Participant Engagement and Increase our Ability to Adapt. Included in the plan are new initiatives that will be prioritised and implemented by the Board, and clearly identifies President Mark's Big Hairy Audacious Goal - to increase by 10 the number of Active Members of the club by the end of 2021. Sarsfield Project Attracts International Funding
The Rotary project to convert an existing community hall in Sarsfield, East Gippsland, into a bushfire evacuation centre has attracted international funding with the pledging of funds totalling USD16,000 from the Rotary Club of Taipai-Tund and Rotary District 3522 Taiwan. This adds to the USD10,000 awarded by the Rotary District 9800 Foundation Committee and a further AUD14,000 awarded by the District 9800 Bushfire Relief Committee. The project, led by Rotarian Mark Stephens and the RC Brighton North, and co-sponsored by the Rotary clubs of Glenferrie and Traralgon, is in the process of applying for a Rotary Foundation Global Grant with a total project budget of AUD138,000.

What is Polio and How Did Rotary Get Involved?
As many of us would have seen recently in social media, in this issue of the Glenferrie Rotarian and in the mainstream press, the entire continent of Africa has recently been declared wild polio virus free.  This is a great achievement thanks to those on-the-ground (Rotarians, community members and NGOs) and the vaccines developed in the middle of last century.

African Region Certified Wild Poliovirus-Free
It is Rotary International's pleasure to announce to you that the African region has just been certified wild poliovirus-free.

Rotary members have played an invaluable role in the effort to rid the African region of wild polio. We should be proud of all the hard work that we’ve done to eliminate the wild poliovirus throughout Africa and in nearly every country in the world.

This progress is the result of a decades-long effort across the 47 countries of the African region.

Taking Action for Peace
International Peace Day is on 21st September, 2020 and there is a lot that we can do.  As we approach this day a range of new information and resources will be published by District 9800.  But to get you started why not take a free Training course at the Rotary Positive Peace Academy or even looking at turning our club into a Peacebuilder Club. See links on the next page.
