Welcome everyone to another rotary year. Thanks again to Teresa for her guidance over the past year.

I am starting to pick up some momentum but there still seems a lot to learn! The new board met last week where a range of updates and issues were discussed.

I hope you can join us at the next meeting where we will be inducting a new member and also an honorary member.

Cooking Classes for Men at the Salvation Army

As many of you know Helena Wimpole and Geoff Widmer have recently completed a series of six cooking classes for disadvantaged men at the Salvation Army facility in Camberwell. The classes have been in operation for many years but were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The purchase of food is funded from a bequest established by the family of a man who enjoyed great benefit from the classes.
 
The classes have been a learning experience for Helena and Geoff as well as the clients. Helena has written some very pertinent notes about the activity, including some useful guidelines for those members who would like to be involved in the future. These notes are included in the Rotarian and many thanks to Helena for her thoughtful document.

UN Path Program Participant Sofia Velasquez

MUNA stands for Model United Nations Assembly, which simulates the workings of the UN Assembly by having teams of two senior students from each of a number of schools represent a particular UN country in debates on matters of world political and social concern.  
 
At last year’s MUNA competition, Siena College entered a team who went on to win best costume (among 50 students).
 
One of the students Sophia found the experience life changing & says ‘it may be a small thing to us but that it has been a large thing for her!'.  It has also allowed her to apply and be accepted into a youth program run by the UN. The Aotearoa Leadership Tour.

Speaker Hikaru Sato
Our Rotary speaker on Tuesday the 27th of June was Hikaru Sato, a Japanese Rotary Global Grant Scholarship recipient.
 
Hikaru is currently studying for her Master’s degree in Public Health at the Australian Catholic University, Melbourne. The focus of her studies is Disease Prevention and Treatment. Hikaru’s scholarship was awarded by the Rotary Foundation, which supports graduate level course work or research, related to Rotary areas of focus.
Hikaru comes from the city of Mito, Japan, which is just north of Tokyo.

Rotary Club of Glenferrie - 30 Years On
The Committee set up to plan the 50th Anniversary celebrations to mark the first half century of The Rotary Club of Glenferrie had its first meeting on the weekend at the home of PP Dr Mark Ellis AM. In 2005 the club published its first official history, titled "30 Years On", written by past presidents the late Llewellyn Jones, the late John Wischer, and current Honorary Members PP David Sutherland and PP Geoffrey Wood. The Rotary Club of Glenferrie will celebrate 50 Years On in October 2025, when an updated history will be published. To read this very interesting account of those first thirty years, click here.
Camberwell Salvation Army Opening

The members of our club are all warmly INVITED to celebrate the Official Opening of the newly renovated Salvation Army facilities at 7 Bowen Street Camberwell on Sunday 16th July.

The outline for the day is as follows:
 
10am to 10:20am
Official reopening ceremony at the front of Bowen Street.
 
10:30am to 11:30am
Worship service with guest preacher Commissioner Miriam Gluyas.
 
11:30noon to 2pm
Sausage sizzle provided by TSA Emergency Services, musical entertainment, children’s activities – face painting, giant games and basketball bungee - deliciously free popcorn and fairy floss for everyone to enjoy, plus a special visit from ‘Shieldy’.

The Alma Doepel

Come along and hear the romantic story of the Alma Doepel, built in 1903 and now being lovingly restored by volunteers as a Youth Training Vessel. Bill Reid will introduce us to the ship's early beginnings as a coastal cargo carrier, through war time troop and supply vessel to the ten-year volunteer driven restoration of a traditional tall ship meeting strict maritime standards to offer life changing Youth Sail Training programs.

Bill Reid has been a volunteer for nearly ten years at the Alma Doepel Restoration in Docklands and is currently the President of the Supporters Club.
