Rotary Opens Opportunities
Thank you for taking the time to visit us. So far, this Rotary year has been a successful yet challenging time for us. We are now closer than ever to stopping the spread of polio and providing the developing world with sources of clean drinking water. However, our jobs are still not done. There is and always will be much work to do, and we would like to invite you to join our community and become part of the cause.
I have the honor and privilege of serving this Club as the current President. I am proud to say that our Club participates in many both local and international causes. On a local level, we are the largest contributor to the Boroondara Cares Chances Scholarship Program, which funds more than 100 secondary school scholarships for disadvantaged deserving children. A very high proportion of those students go on to complete tertiary studies, greatly enhancing their future prospects. In partnership with other organisations, including the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, we undertake annual eye surgery clinics on the island of Sumba in Indonesia, restoring sight and hope to many who would otherwise be totally dependent upon others.  Through our work running the Boroondara Farmers Market we raise funds that aid the homeless, provide sanitation and clean water, open up educational opportunities and help young mothers and babies. Through Rotary networks, fundraising and project leadership resources, we have been able to do wonderful work that has changed for the better the lives of many. The global fight to eradicate polio started with the vision of just one man, a Queensland Rotarian who put Rotary resources to work to start a global movement to drive that dreadful disease from the face of the Earth. You too can make a difference in the world through Rotary.
To learn more about what it means to be a member of our great community, I invite you to attend one of our meetings. We convene every Tuesday evening except the first Tuesday of the month for our evening dinner meetings where we discuss topics relevant to our efforts and frequently feature keynote speakers to present and share their ideas. Whether you're an active Rotarian, a prospective speaker, or just an interested individual, I hope to see you soon.
Yours in Rotary,
Mark Ellis AM
President 2020-2021
